Introducing Lexy

November 2, 2008 by Kari Allen

We need to introduce La Cantera Lexy De Britton, a.k.a. “Lexy”, the newest female puppy.

Lexy’s Survival Story

Lexy is the newest member of the family. We purchased her from Britton Farms Dobermans in the summer of 2008. Lexy was six weeks old. I took her home and a few weeks later I had my veterinarian crop her ears.

Three weeks after that, Lexy became very ill. We rushed her to the emergency room where she was on oxygen all weekend. They could not make a final diagnosis. Monday morning, I rushed her to the Animal Diagnostic Referral Center, where Dr. Susan O’Neil started a wide array of tests. After an unnecessary surgery and many internists later, she was diagnosed with a lung that abscessed due to possible aspiration during ear surgery.  She had had developed E. Coli and pseudomonas in her lungs. The antibiotics she was on were not working on the strain of pseudomonas she had. Lexy was on an aspirator to drain over 700cc per day of fluid from her lungs for seven days.

The staff at the clinic said Lexy was a fighter! They hand fed her six times per day as she lost 10 pounds. Lexy could barely walk. She had 24-hour care for three and a half weeks, and it was touch-and-go for two weeks. Dr. O’Neil said she has never met a puppy that wanted to live so bad! I visited Lexy every day during this time to try to keep her spirits up.

Lexy went for her final checkup on November 3, 2008 and her lungs are 100 percent clear, and she is now a normal spoiled puppy. She loves going to her checkups. She thinks that the Referral Center is her second home.

I want to thank Dr. Susan O’Neil and their staff for saving our “Little Lexy Lou”, as they call her at the referral center.

I can’t wait to breed her, as I hope that she produces puppies as smart and with the “will to live” as our Little Lexy. (I guess she is not so little anymore!)
